Our Church History

HISTORY OF THE CHURCH OF GOD WORLD FELLOWSHIP (C.G.W.F)
C.G.W.F was founded by the late Bishop F.S. Wallen on 17th January 1960 at 52 Lime Grove, Shepherds Bush, London W12. The first hymn that was sung was “Jesus Saviour pilots me” and the Scripture readings were: Matthew 28:19-20; Ephesians 4 and 1st Timothy 3: 1-12.

In 1961 Bishop Wallen moved over to Brixton and there he set up the Church at 15 Effra Road, Brixton London SW2. The opening song was “Precious Lord hold my hand”. Bishop had great visions for the Church and laboured in ministering the Word of God seeking the saving of souls. In doing so, the Church began to move forward under his faithful leadership and grew from strength to strength. Shortly after, men such as Rev Kelly, Rev Miller and Rev Anderson and many others joined in the work under Bishop Wallen. Rev Graham was ordained the Pastor and the Church continued to grow in strength and number until it became imperative to move to a bigger building. The Church Hall in Elm Park, Brixton, then became the place of worship. Rev Kelly became the Pastor of the Church which continued to grow rapidly and new Fellowships were born under C.G.W.F throughout London.

Due to a great outpouring at the Convention held at Brixton Town Hall in 1963, the Church was established widely and was in close fellowship with Rev C. Cates from Christian Fellowship in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Church went through a period where it had lost a number of standing members and Ministers, however, a great recovery was made under the leadership of Bishop T.H. Baxter, who believed that no matter what problems were faced, the Church will stand being that Christ is the Head of the Church. In the mid 70’s Bishop Wallen immigrated to America and Overseer Baxter was then ordained as the Bishop. He also had great visions for the Church which led to C.G.W.F purchasing its first Church in London in 1983 followed by Bishop Wallen purchasing a Church in Florida in 1988.
As well as in the UK, the Ministry also began to flourish in Jamaica under the leadership of the late Overseer Lovelace. C.G.W.F. is a prosperous growing Fellowship which now has Churches in England, Jamaica, India and the USA.

There are still some veterans with us who are still serving in the Ministry from the 1960’s – we salute you.
